A story has been told about a certain very successful manufacturing company. For many years they were the leader in their market, but as their equipment aged they began to have equipment failures. One proprietary machine, that was central to their product, eventually ceased working altogether. Many years earlier this machine had been designed and built by a renown engineer, now retired. The CEO of the company attempted to hire outside companies to repair this crucial machine, but to no avail. No one seemed to be able to diagnose the problem. Finally, in desperation, the CEO contacted the retired engineer and prevailed upon him to visit the plant. When the engineer arrived, he carefully examined the machine, and then reached into his pocket, removed a piece of white chalk and placed an “X” on one of the components. “Have your engineers replace this component and the machine will be as good as new”, he said. The CEO was overjoyed. As the engineer prepared to leave, the CEO remarked, “Please don’t forget to send us an invoice for your time.” A week later an invoice arrived for $50,000. The CEO was astonished at the price, and immediately emailed the engineer asking for an itemized bill. When the new invoice arrived it stated simply:
